![]() ![]() 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. ( W) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. ( V) The Boy Jesus at the TempleĤ1 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. ( U) 40 And the child grew and became strong he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. ( T)ģ9 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. ![]() ( S) 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. ( R) She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. She was very old she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”ģ6 There was also a prophet, ( Q) Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: ( O) “This child is destined to cause the falling ( P) and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. ( L)ģ0 For my eyes have seen your salvation, ( M)ģ1 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:ģ2 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,Īnd the glory of your people Israel.” ( N)ģ3 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. You may now dismiss your servant in peace. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, ( J) 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:Ģ9 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, ( K) 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. ( H) He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, ( I) and the Holy Spirit was on him. ( D) Jesus Presented in the TempleĢ2 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, ( E) Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord” ), ( F) 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.” ( G)Ģ5 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. ( A) 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God ( B) for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.Ģ1 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, ( C) he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived. We can also only imagine her joy and the Spirit that must have been present with them in that sacred place” (Kim Rollins, “ What We ‘Got’ For Christmas Last Year”).19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. I don’t know that any of us could possibly imagine the weight of the responsibility that she must have felt knowing she was holding the tiny Savior of the world in her arms. I love that she pondered, and I have often wondered what she was thinking. Quote: “I love that, after the eager shepherds left to spread the word that the newborn Savior was finally here, Mary was quiet that she was still. Her response is a sweet reminder to us to treasure our spiritual experiences. But it seems she also recognized that some spiritual things should not be shared. Perhaps she would later share with others what she felt was appropriate to share about her son. And she, more than anyone, would have recognized the miracle that had just taken place. ![]() She, perhaps more than anyone, knew what it meant to have the Savior be born into the world. Mary recognized the depth of her spiritual experience. ![]()
